EXCLUSIVE-Bangladeshi Cricket Star Shakib, a Hasina Ally, Says He Is Ready to Return Home and Face Trial if Given Security | Sports-Games
The cricket star says he will face murder and anti-corruption cases and wants a farewell series if officials ensure his safety.
On Saturday, Bangladeshi cricket star Shakib Al Hasan announced he is ready to return from two-year exile to face trial and play a farewell series if the government guarantees his security.
The 39-year-old has lived abroad since the August 2024 uprising ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, whose Awami League party Shakib served as a lawmaker for during his political career.
Facing two active cases including a 2024 murder charge, Shakib maintains his innocence, calling the legal proceedings "a laughable case" while his bank accounts remain frozen pending investigation.
Bangladesh Sports Minister Aminul Haque adopted a tougher stance after Shakib appeared with Hasina, stating, "After that, it doesn't seem like there's any room for that kind of thinking anymore."
Despite these complications, Shakib hopes to represent Bangladesh at the 2027 one-day World Cup, though the government press secretary stated there is "nothing" they can do to regain public support for him.
