Severe flooding hits the West Island; over 20,000 without power, roads closed by police
Torrential rainfall submerged roads and basements, while Hydro-Québec said more than 18,000 customers lost electricity.
On Saturday, torrential rainfall from strong thunderstorms triggered flash flooding across Montreal's West Island, submerging cars and leaving about 20,000 homes without power as Environment Canada issued an orange weather warning.
Meteorologists reported that slow-moving thunderstorms and ground with reduced ability to absorb rain intensified flooding across Laval, Pierrefonds, and Dorval before the system reached the South Shore.
In Dollard-des-Ormeaux, resident Natasha Krauza stated she was stranded with "I'm in about three feet of water," while officers closed sections of Pierrefonds Boulevard to ensure safety.
An emergency power shutdown began shortly before 6 p.m. in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, while Dorval Mayor Marc Doret reported municipal teams were responding to flooding across the region.
Severe weather at Montreal-Trudeau Airport delayed about 20 departing flights and cancelled 10, with officials advising passengers to check schedules as conditions improved later Saturday evening.
