Microsoft Releases Emergency Windows Updates to Fix RDS Failures
The emergency patch restores Remote Desktop Services and Hyper-V features, while some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices still have playback problems, Microsoft said.
- On Tuesday, Microsoft released an out-of-band update for Windows following September's Patch Tuesday, which addressed nearly 1,000 vulnerabilities but had introduced new problems including protections for CVE-2026-62721.
- Those initial updates disrupted RDP, host folders shared with Hyper-V-based Linux virtual machines via Plan9, and USB Audio Class 1.0 devices before the fix was deployed.
- The update restores multichannel playback for some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices, though other affected hardware may remain silent or display "This device cannot start " in Device Manager.
- Owners of devices still experiencing silent audio were told: "Microsoft is working on a resolution and will update this documentation when more information is available."
- Separately, September security updates for Excel broke the Paste function on some installations; users including Blake and Paratiritis noted the issue remains unresolved by Microsoft.
