Seoul's green space a battleground for mayor and South Korea's president
Oh opposes Lee’s plan to add apartments to a 300-hectare park site as Seoul apartment prices rose for 86 straight weeks, officials said.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon clashed on Tuesday over plans to build apartments on Yongsan Park, a 300-hectare site currently protected by law.
Lee's public approval plunged to a record low 37% over the past two months as apartment prices climbed for 86 consecutive weeks, intensifying pressure to expand housing land.
Mayor Oh, who has led Seoul for 20 years, rejected the proposal to protect the city's 'greenery deficit,' noting Seoul residents have just a fourth of the green space Londoners enjoy.
Lee blamed the city government for supply shortages at a press conference, while Oh argued that mortgage curbs disproportionately hurt young, first-time buyers by restricting borrowing power.
Any development requires National Assembly action, creating potential gridlock between the president and the opposition-aligned mayor, who political analysts consider a likely presidential contender for 2030.
