Senate’s likely next No. 2 warns Trump if Democrats take the majority: ‘It’s going to be a fight’ on key values
Schatz said Democrats would use Senate confirmation powers to block Trump nominees and press the White House on healthcare, tariffs and foreign policy.
Sen. Brian Schatz, positioned for the No. 2 Democratic leadership role, warned President Donald Trump that a Democratic-led Senate would aggressively challenge his policy agenda and Cabinet appointments if Democrats secure a majority this fall.
Democrats must overcome unfavorability ratings stemming from economic disconnection and high prices, Schatz said, aiming to recover trust with working-class voters through better discipline and focus on the cost of living.
"The quality of the nominees would immediately have to go up," Schatz stated, warning that controversial picks like Bill Pulte, RFK, or Pete Hegseth would face rejection in a Democratic-controlled Senate.
While Schatz believes the president has done "a million impeachable things," he views impeachment as an "important tactical question" and insists Congress must vote to authorize military force in Iran.
Dismissing sweeping election-year agendas as "overrated," Schatz argued the party should prioritize specific issues like healthcare and tariffs instead of settling 2028 presidential primary questions prematurely.
