Senate Approves Trump’s Pick to Lead the Labor Department
The Senate approved him by a 47-41 vote after he served as acting labor secretary since April.
On Wednesday, the Senate confirmed Keith Sonderling to lead the Labor Department in a 47-41 vote, officially installing him after serving as acting secretary since April.
Sonderling replaced Lori Chavez-DeRemer, who departed the position in April after the Labor Department's inspector general issued a report detailing a "toxic, intimidating and humiliating" work environment under her leadership.
Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., argued the confirmation would "strip overtime protections," while Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., praised Sonderling's ability to help workers navigate "AI-driven changes."
This appointment follows Cabinet shakeups occurring weeks after President Trump fired Attorney General Pam Bondi and replaced Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, with senators departing to campaign for midterm elections.
Sonderling enters the role as President Trump works to fulfill his campaign pledge to close the Department of Education, a goal Democrats criticized regarding Labor Department management of Education grant programs.
