Senate committee advances Dr. Nicole Saphier’s nomination for surgeon general
The 12-11 party-line vote sends the radiologist and former Fox News contributor one step closer to becoming the nation’s top doctor.
- The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee voted 12 to 11 on Wednesday to advance Dr. Nicole Saphier's nomination for surgeon general, marking President Donald Trump's third attempt to fill the role.
- Saphier's advancement follows the stalled nomination of Casey Means earlier this year and the withdrawal of Janette Nesheiwat last year by Trump.
- During her confirmation hearing earlier this month, Saphier responded that she does "not believe childhood vaccines cause autism," adding that the MMR vaccine is "our greatest tool for combating measles."
- GOP Sen. Bill Cassidy supported the nominee after hearing her vaccine stance, while Sen. Bernie Sanders opposed the nomination, citing concerns about Saphier's past questioning of the hepatitis B vaccine at birth.
- Last week, the Senate Finance Committee also advanced Chris Klomp for deputy secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services on a 15 to 12 vote, with Klomp facing similar vaccine questioning as Saphier.
