- On Tuesday, The Senate amended its rules to require candidates for Senate President and Deputy Senate President to have served at least eight consecutive years in the chamber, announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio following a majority voice vote.
- Before this change, any ranking senator—defined as one who has served at least four years—could contest for presiding offices. The new rule mandates service must be consecutive and immediately precede nomination.
- The Senate also introduced additional changes, including setting committee sizes between seven and 25 members and establishing oversight for South-west, North-central, North-west, South-east, and South-south Development Commissions.
- Edo North Senator Adams Oshiomhole is affected by the amendment as a first-term senator, rendering him ineligible to contest for leadership positions under the new provision.
- Following the adoption of these amendments, Akpabio directed Clerk of the Senate Emmanuel Odo to update the official Senate rules to reflect the changes.
