IDF Chief Eyal Zamir Cancels Washington Visit Amid Heightened Alert
The military said Zamir must stay to oversee readiness as the IDF remains on high alert across all sectors.
Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir canceled his planned trip to the United States on Wednesday, citing Israel's heightened security situation and operational alert across all military sectors.
A senior IDF official explained the decision: "You can't put the army on high alert and fly abroad." The military command determined Zamir must remain in-country to manage readiness during heightened operational tension.
During a visit to the Tel Nof Air Force base, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that "there are indications that ahead of the elections our enemies will try to attack us," though he did not identify the specific threats.
Following the Prime Minister's warning, Opposition Leader Yair Lapid requested an urgent security briefing on Tuesday. After receiving updates from the Shin Bet, Lapid reassured the public there was "no reason to cause public panic."
Strategic meetings with the commander of United States Central Command and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs were planned to address threats from Iran and facilitate military cooperation between the nations.
The head of the Israeli General Staff, Eyal Zamir, cancelled his trip to the United States scheduled for Wednesday, September 30, and instead of negotiating in Washington, D.C., the lieutenant general will remain in the country where the army has increased its operational readiness.
