Families Demand Answers After More than 50 Decomposing Bodies Found at Southeast Side Funeral Home
State regulators say 56 bodies and more than 50 boxes of ashes were found, and a second Chicago facility was ordered to stop accepting remains.
- On Saturday, the Illinois state comptroller's office expanded its investigation to Bohemian National Cemetery and Crematorium, ordering the facility to stop accepting human remains after finding equipment failures.
- Last Thursday, authorities discovered 56 decomposing bodies at South Chicago Chapel, a facility operated by Johanna Morgan and her husband, Clark Morgan, who previously faced disciplinary actions.
- Records indicate Johanna Morgan allowed "multiple decedents to be kept in an unrefrigerated area with deplorable conditions including rodent infestation, causing decomposition and maggot infestation of the bodies," state regulators reported.
- Illinois State Comptroller Susana Mendoza stated, "They should have criminal charges pressed against them for how they mishandle these bodies," while noting she is thankful for new state laws allowing immediate license suspension.
- Investigators are now working to identify the deceased and review records, while the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office continues to assist police in identifying the remains found at both locations.
