UEFA Nations League: Scotland Promotion Hopes Dealt Crushing Blow by Slovenia Turnaround
Slovenia overturned Ryan Christie’s opener as Scotland’s defensive lapses cost them a Nations League home win.
On Tuesday, Scotland suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Slovenia in the Nations League, extending manager Sebastien Pocognoli's wait for a first Hampden win.
Pocognoli's first match in charge saw a goalless draw in Ljubljana ten days ago, followed by a home defeat to Switzerland before Saturday's dominant win against North Macedonia failed to prevent defensive frailties.
Ryan Christie opened the scoring in the 31st minute, but Slovenia equalized on 56 minutes through Danijel Sturm, and Aljosa Matko later secured victory for the visitors after Scotland's defense struggled repeatedly.
Before kick-off, captain Andy Robertson received a shirt commemorating his 100th cap, while Billy Gilmour marked his 50th appearance at age 25, and Josh McPake and Findlay Curtis made senior international debuts.
Striker McBurnie extended his goal drought to more than 1,000 minutes in a Scotland shirt, while Pocognoli's tactical changes failed to stem the tide as the team searched for answers.
The Slovenians now have two more Nations League matches to play. On November 13, they will host Switzerland in Stožice, and three days later they will play away to North Macedonia.
