Kraken to Break Ground on $60 Million Kirkland Ice Complex
The privately financed facility will add two NHL-sized rinks, a community center and public programming, with officials estimating $7 million in annual economic activity.
On Wednesday, the Seattle Kraken and the City of Kirkland announced a new $60 million, 80,000-square-foot iceplex at the former Houghton Park and Ride site, featuring two NHL-regulation ice rinks, a community center, restaurant, and team store.
This public-private partnership aims to support the continued growth of ice sports on the Eastside, with Kirkland Mayor Kelli Curtis stating the project delivers significant investment and community opportunities with no new taxes.
The facility is expected to generate $7 million annually in economic activity, and the Kraken confirmed late Tuesday it is in discussions with the Seattle Torrent about the women's hockey team potentially calling the iceplex home.
Construction is scheduled to break ground in May 2026, with the facility opening in fall 2027, while the team maintains staff headquarters at the Kraken Community Iceplex in Northgate.
Success at the original Northgate facility drove the expansion; the Kraken Hockey League grew by over 50% in five years, with CEO Tod Leiweke noting the popularity of ice sports has surged across the region.
