Pause in Glasgow Council Fire-and-Rehire Plan Ends After Talks Collapse Again
The pause follows Scottish Government intervention as the council says dismissing and rehiring 23,000 workers is needed to impose a lawful pay scheme.
On Friday, Glasgow City Council paused plans to sack and rehire 23,000 non-teaching staff following an intervention by Deputy First Minister Jenny Gilruth.
Legal battles over a discriminatory pay and grading system dating to 2006 have cost Glasgow around £770 million, prompting the council's restructuring attempt.
Talks broke down after Unison refused to ballot members on the latest offer, with Council leader Councillor Ricky Bell stating he is "deeply disappointed" by the rejection.
Although the pause for Unison members ended, the council is working with Unite and GMB to ensure their members are not dismissed, with detailed discussions scheduled for Thursday.
The government outlawed "fire and rehire" practices at the turn of this year, leading Labour figures to criticize the SNP-led council for attempting the tactic.
