Giant Cyborg Cockroaches Could Bring Supervised Care to People Trapped Beyond Rescuers' Reach
The insects can be remote-controlled, carry cameras and sensors, and deliver medicine in 72% of proof-of-concept trials, researchers said.
- Australian biorobotics engineers have developed "paraborg" cockroaches equipped with cameras, sensors, and syringe-firing backpacks for search and rescue missions. These insect-robot hybrids aim to reach victims trapped in collapsed buildings or caves where human rescuers cannot safely enter.
- Powering these cyborgs with gum leaves and apple slices allows them to operate for days, unlike machines restricted by limited battery life. University of Queensland biorobotics engineer Dr. Thang Vo-Doan notes that current robots lack the agility and efficiency of these natural survivors.
- In proof-of-concept testing, the "paraborg" insects achieved a 95 per cent success rate for injections positioned within 15cm of a target. PhD candidate Hai Nhan Le reported that the complete navigation and injection task succeeded in 72 per cent of trials.
- Following deployment alongside Singapore's Operation Lionheart team after a 2025 Myanmar earthquake, the technology remains under evaluation. Superintendent Tim Hassiotis of Fire & Rescue NSW suggests that if effective, these cyborgs could become a valuable tool for urban search and rescue.
- Within five to 10 years, experts hope to deploy cyborg insect rescue teams to independently search for victims. Professor Hirotaka Sato suggests the ultimate goal is creating fully autonomous teams capable of exploring environments ranging from deep oceans to Mars.
