Scientists Made A Car Paint So Black It Barely Reflects Light

The coating averaged 0.08% reflectance and passed humidity, water-resistance and adhesion tests, researchers said.

  • On Thursday, Nipsea Group announced a new ultra-black automotive coating capable of absorbing 99.9% of visible light, targeting China's growing demand for deep-black luxury vehicles.
  • Scientists created the material using "structural absorption" and a natural attraction between CB-CNT, overcoming limits faced by conventional black coatings that rely solely on carbon black dispersions.
  • Researchers subjected panels to 104 Fahrenheit heat and high humidity for 14 days, proving the coating remained "notably stable" and more resilient than the Vantablack-inspired BMW X6 from 2019.
  • To address safety concerns, Nipsea research chemist Zhiwei Liu noted the team included a glossy overcoat to help vehicles retain defining features rather than appearing two-dimensional.
  • Liu stated further work is necessary to improve practical processability before consumers see dark luxury sedans cruising streets, though the coating currently meets automotive standards.
