'Schmigadoon!' Wins the Tony Award for Best New Musical
Schmigadoon led the field with 12 nominations and four wins, including Best Musical, completing Apple TV’s four-award set, officials said.
Apple TV officially achieved EGOT status on Sunday at the 79th Tony Awards, with its Broadway adaptation of Schmigadoon! winning Best Musical and four awards total.
Launched in November 2019, Apple TV accomplished this milestone in about six-and-a-half years, significantly faster than Netflix, which required roughly 12 years to attain EGOT status.
Apple secured its previous accolades through Emmy wins for Ted Lasso and The Studio, a Best Picture Oscar for CODA, and a Grammy for Chris Stapleton's F1 soundtrack.
Producer Lorne Michaels noted the win completes a "studio EGOT," while the ceremony honored actor John Lithgow for his third Tony and playwright Bess Wohl for Liberation.
Broadway also celebrated traditional theatrical achievements, including Death of a Salesman winning Best Revival, underscoring an evolving landscape where streaming adaptations and classic productions now coexist.
The New York Broadway looks back on a record season at the Tony Awards. "Schmigadoon!" triumphs as the best new musical. "Ragtime" wins as the best new production and among the musical protagonists. John Lithgow wins the award as the best actor.
