- On Monday, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended three High Court Chief Justices for elevation to the Supreme Court: Justice Sunita Agarwal of Gujarat High Court, Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya of Delhi High Court, and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh of Telangana High Court.
- The recommendations address three vacancies in the apex court, which currently has 34 judges against a sanctioned strength of 38 judges.
- Justice Agarwal has led Gujarat High Court since July 2023 after her 2011 elevation to Allahabad High Court, while Justice Upadhyaya has headed Delhi High Court since January 2025, also elevated to Allahabad in 2011; Justice Singh progressed through Jharkhand, Tripura, and Telangana High Courts.
- The Union government will now process the Collegium's recommendations before formally notifying the appointments, with Justice Agarwal having nearly five years before reaching the Supreme Court's mandatory retirement age of 65.
- Once approved, the three elevations would significantly strengthen the Supreme Court's bench by reducing vacancies from four to one and drawing judicial experience from courts across Gujarat, Delhi, and Telangana.

The five-judge collegium of the Supreme Court has recommended the Chief Justices of Gujarat, Delhi and Telangana High Courts to be appointed as Supreme Court judges. After the appointment, the Supreme Court will have a total of 37 judges, which is just one less than the maximum sanctioned strength of 38.
