Savannah Guthrie Abruptly Leaves Today Mid-Show
Craig Melvin said Guthrie would return the next day as authorities continue investigating her mother Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.
On Wednesday, May 6, NBC News anchor Savannah Guthrie abruptly left the Today show mid-broadcast roughly 90 minutes into the live program, with co-anchor Craig Melvin telling viewers she "had to leave a little early."
Guthrie's exit follows the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie, who was reported missing from her Tucson, Arizona, home on Feb. 1; authorities believe the 84-year-old was abducted.
FBI Director Kash Patel claimed on Tuesday, May 5, that local authorities restricted federal agents from the investigation, a charge the Pima County Sheriff's Office disputed as the 100-day mark approached.
A source told Page Six that Guthrie left "for some sort of appointment, and her exit had nothing to do with her mom," though NBC News has not issued an official statement amid viewer speculation.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos maintains the department remains "fully committed" to the case as DNA and video analysis continue; authorities released surveillance footage of a masked individual, though no suspect has been named.
