SA hosting Wafcon in March? No confirmation, says sports minister McKenzie
South Africa remains ready to host the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations if required, but Morocco is the official host and no relocation decision has been made, said Minister McKenzie.
- On February 02, 2026, Gayton McKenzie denied South Africa will replace Morocco as hosts of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, saying Morocco remains the officially designated host.
- At the Hollywoodbets Super League Awards on Sunday, Mabe said, `We took an opportunity because we feel that we have the necessary infrastructure to support hosting the Wafcon. When Morocco said that they will not be able to host the Wafcon, South Africa said yes, we are able to host it`, Mabe said.
- McKenzie warned any switch would require CAF approval and South African government sign-off, including checks on host cities, stadiums, accommodation, transport, and government guarantees.
- The Department said it will continue to engage with CAF, and all announcements will follow formal decisions, as Mabe's comments were only an indication, not confirmation.
- With the tournament due from March 17 to April 3, 2026, hosting choices are time-sensitive as the Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture pursues a long-term strategy to boost sport and tourism in South Africa.
