Ryan Coogler Moves TV Deal From Disney to Netflix
The multi-year pact follows the end of Proximity’s Disney TV deal and keeps its series development under Simone Harris at Netflix.
- Proximity Media, the production company founded by filmmaker Ryan Coogler, his wife Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian, signed a multi-year agreement to develop television series exclusively for Netflix.
- Disney's five-year television agreement with Proximity Media expired earlier this year, creating the opening for the streamer partnership. In 2021, then-Disney CEO Bob Iger called Coogler a "singular storyteller."
- Coogler recently celebrated Sinners, the highest-grossing original feature film of 2025, earning over $365 million globally and securing 16 Oscar nominations. The film won four awards, including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan.
- Jinny Howe, Netflix Head of US and Canada Scripted Series, welcomed the collaboration, stating Proximity Media has established itself as a company championing visionary creators and producing stories that resonate globally.
- Coogler remains in business with Disney despite the Netflix deal, overseeing existing projects including a pilot for The X-Files reboot and a live-action adaptation of Southern Bastards, both in active development.
