Rwanda: Kagame Hails 'Brotherly' Ties With Tanzania, Pledges Deeper Cooperation

The two presidents said they will speed up trade, transport and customs reforms as Tanzania handles about 70% of Rwanda’s maritime cargo, officials said.

  • On Sunday, May 3, President Paul Kagame visited Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, for a one-day working visit with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan to strengthen bilateral trade, infrastructure, and regional cooperation.
  • Tanzania serves as a critical gateway for landlocked Rwanda, facilitating around 70 per cent of its maritime cargo through the Port of Dar es Salaam and the Central Corridor trade route.
  • According to the Ministry of Trade and Industry's 2024/25 report, Rwanda imported goods worth $709 million from Tanzania, representing more than 10 per cent of its total import bill.
  • To manage growing business volumes, Suluhu and Kagame agreed to accelerate cooperation by removing non-tariff barriers and investing in transportation, energy, and security.
  • Beyond trade, Rwanda intends to recognize Tanzanian citizens who demonstrated heroism during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, while prioritizing the East African Community's development agenda.
