Rutland tax rate down, tax bills up

RUTLAND — Residents should not get too excited when they see that the town’s tax rate has dropped. The rate drop does not mean tax bills are dropping; rather, it reflects the fact that home values have risen substantially, so that the property valuation part of the tax rate formula rose more than the percentage increase in the the tax levy.
