Russia strikes second major bridge in Kyiv, mayor says
Kyiv officials said the strike damaged the road and trolleybus lines, and Russia’s Defense Ministry said the bridge carried military cargo.
- On Saturday, Russian forces struck Kyiv's Northern Bridge with a drone, damaging the road surface and trolleybus power lines. Two people were injured in the attack, marking the third consecutive day of strikes on the capital's infrastructure.
- The Southern Bridge suffered repeated hits between October 1 and October 2, with at least five drone strikes damaging support structures, guardrails, and metro infrastructure. Authorities closed the crossing entirely, disrupting transit between the Dnipro River's eastern and western banks.
- Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko warned the capital must now operate on a "war footing" following the gridlock. Russia's Defense Ministry claimed the bridges are used to "facilitate troop movements and the logistics of military cargo deliveries" for Ukrainian forces.
- Traffic restrictions now impact multiple Dnipro River crossings, creating severe gridlock that forced some commuters to walk. Public transport, including trolleybus routes and metro lines, faced significant suspensions and delays across Kyiv.
- Beyond the capital, Moldova reported that Russian attack drones violated its airspace on Saturday morning before exploding. These strikes reflect an intensifying aerial campaign targeting civil infrastructure across the region throughout the week.
