Russia slams Japanese drills with US and Australia, says US Typhon missile systems pose threat
Russia said the drills will involve 3,700 personnel and warned the Typhon launchers could threaten its national security.
On Tuesday, Russia formally protested to Japan regarding the Orient Shield exercises, condemning the deployment of American Typhon missile launchers as a threat to Russian security.
Diplomatic friction between Moscow and Tokyo intensified following President Vladimir Putin's rare visit to a Russian-controlled island, prompting an exchange of formal protests in recent weeks.
The Orient Shield drills will deploy 3,700 personnel from three countries and feature the Typhon system, which can fire Tomahawk cruise missiles up to 1,600 kilometers.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova called the deployment "absolutely unacceptable," stating that Moscow is preparing compensatory countermeasures to ensure national security.
The launchers were previously deployed to Kagoshima Prefecture in June and will move to a United States base in Japan following the September 8–24 exercises.

Moscow warned Japan not to deploy the American Tomahawk cruise missiles on its territory even during the exercise, and it was clearly pointed out to the Japanese Embassy that the deployment of the Typhon medium-range missile systems on Japan's territory was totally unacceptable, including under
