Russia says no plague cases detected among contacts of deceased lab worker
Authorities said extensive testing found no plague-linked microorganisms in the worker’s body and that 60% of 200 quarantined contacts were released.
On Tuesday, Russia's health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor reported that no plague cases were detected among contacts of a deceased Siberian plague institute laboratory worker who died last week.
The 28-year-old woman died on Friday from pneumonia of an as-yet unestablished origin, prompting the quarantine of a local hospital in the Shelekhov district near Irkutsk.
Local media reported that around 200 people were previously quarantined as a precaution, with 60% already released. Rospotrebnadzor added that no infectious diseases were reported among institute staff in Irkutsk over the past 10 days.
World Health Organization spokesperson Christian Lindmeier said on Tuesday that Russian authorities have not yet responded to their request for information. Elena Sofina, deputy head of the Shelekhov district, stated that what she called "a dangerous diagnosis" had not been confirmed.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed appreciation for an offer of help on Monday from President Donald Trump, though it remains unclear if Moscow will accept. Trump previously described the situation as a "big problem for Russia.
Examinations in the body of the 28-year-old employee did not indicate microorganisms from the laboratory where she worked; isolated hospital has already released internees
