Russia says Armenia is being dragged into EU's 'anti-Russian orbit'
Russia warned Armenia’s EU outreach would bring political and economic costs as Yerevan deepens ties with European leaders after the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute.
On Thursday, Russia's Foreign Ministry warned that Armenia is being drawn into the European Union's "anti-Russian orbit," stating this alignment will "inevitably lead to negative political and economic consequences for Armenia."
Relations between Moscow and Yerevan have grown increasingly rancorous since September 2023, when Azerbaijan forcibly retook Nagorno-Karabakh despite the presence of Russian peacekeepers.
Yerevan hosted the European Political Community summit on May 4, bringing more than 40 European leaders to the capital as Armenia seeks to deepen ties with the European Union.
Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters that Armenia, with the approval of its leadership, was becoming aligned with what she described as "aggressive Euro-Atlantic standards."
Armenia balances its historical dependence on Russian military bases with active pursuit of integration into European political and economic structures, seeking alternative security assurances amid the shifting geopolitical landscape.
