Russia kills 11 in one of its biggest strikes on Ukraine, Zelenskyy says
The barrage hit energy and residential sites, while rescuers and bomb disposal teams worked after an unexploded missile landed among homes.
On Wednesday, Russian missiles and drones pounded Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions, killing at least 19 civilians, including four children, and wounding around 60. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the overnight barrage as "massive."
A Russian strike destroyed an apartment block in Pryluky, Chernihiv region, killing 13 people, including four children, and wounding about 50, Interior Minister Ihor Vyhivskyi reported. Vyhivskyi noted the attack aimed to make Ukrainians "afraid to fall asleep."
Facing 70 incoming projectiles, Ukraine struggled to counter ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones without sufficient ammunition for its US-made Patriot air defense systems. Zelenskyy called air defense packages a "vital necessity."
Ukraine responded by launching long-range drones and missiles at oil facilities in the Perm, Samara, and Astrakhan regions of Russia. Zelenskyy also indicated strikes occurred in the Black Sea, targeting ships near Sochi.
The European Commission disbursed €1.24 billion to Ukraine for drone and missile interceptors, as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned Russia's "deliberate strategy of terror." The aerial war remains ruinous for Ukraine.
