Russia Conducts Missile Test Near Japan-Claimed Islands

Russia said missiles from a submarine, cruiser and coastal battery hit targets more than 300 km away in a rare exercise near disputed islands.

  • The Russian Pacific Fleet announced missile exercises near the Southern Kuril islands on Aug 20, involving naval vessels and land-based launchers in the Far East, escalating recent friction between Moscow and Tokyo.
  • Long-Standing territorial disputes stemming from World War II, when the Soviet Union seized the islands, have prevented Russia and Japan from signing a formal peace treaty.
  • During the drills, Russia deployed Bastion coastal defence batteries on Iturup Island, known in Japan as Etorofu, with missiles fired at targets more than 300km away and hitting them.
  • Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi told reporters, "Russia's military buildup on the four Northern Islands runs counter to Japan's position and is unacceptable," according to Kyodo News.
  • Tensions heightened after Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Iturup last week, compounded by Japan's support for Ukraine and the failure of Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's past negotiations to return islands.
