The U.N. has documented more than 1,000 cases of sexual violence in Russia’s war against Ukraine. It attributes 89% to Russia, and most of the victims are men.
On September 18, the United Nations published a report on conflict-related sexual violence in Ukraine, based on interviews conducted by its monitoring mission from the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion through July 31, 2026. Meduza summarizes the report’s key findings.
The UN human rights office has released a report on sexual violence during the war in Ukraine. According to investigators, 89 percent of more than a thousand documented cases can be attributed to Russian armed forces, prison and security services. The victims included men, women and children, and the violence was recorded both in the occupied territories of Ukraine and in Russian detention centers.
A new UN report records 1,004 verified cases of sexual violence linked to the war in Ukraine, for the period from February 24, 2022 to July 31, 2026. The UN points out that this number does not reflect the total number of incidents, as sexual violence in wartime situations is often underreported.
