Russia hits Liberian-flagged ship in Ukraine's Odesa port, kills one
The attack injured three other crew members and prompted the evacuation of 13 sailors, according to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority.
On Saturday, Oct. 3, Russian forces struck a Liberian-flagged civilian cargo vessel in an Odesa region port, killing one crew member and injuring three others, the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority reported.
Recent months have seen repeated strikes on commercial ships in Black Sea transit lanes; a Sept. 10 attack on the tugboat Tedy killed Azerbaijani sailors Aslan Aliyev and Asim Gasimov.
Following the bombardment, 13 crew members were successfully evacuated to a safe location, while emergency crews and port security personnel responded immediately to secure the vessel and assess destruction.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov claimed Russian attacks on transport arteries were retaliatory measures, while Ukraine's Ministry condemned the engagement as part of an institutionalized campaign targeting civilian maritime logistics.
Ukrainian authorities and international maritime bodies categorically reject the Kremlin's accusations, emphasizing that targeted ships are standard merchant vessels engaged in agricultural and bulk cargo transit under international maritime law.
