Four More Years? Russia-Ukraine War Nears Two Million Casualties Mark
The Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates up to 1.8 million casualties so far with projections reaching 2 million by spring amid ongoing attrition warfare.
- Tuesday, the Center for Strategic and International Studies warned combined Russian and Ukrainian casualties may reach 2 million by spring, releasing the report less than a month before Feb. 24.
- The report found the war has settled into a grinding war of attrition with Russian advances averaging between 15 and 70 meters per day, while neither Moscow nor Kyiv gives timely data.
- CSIS provided a country breakdown showing Russia suffered 1.2 million casualties, including up to 325,000 deaths, while Ukraine had 500,000 to 600,000 casualties, including up to 140,000 deaths.
- Ukraine's air force reported Russia attacked overnight with one ballistic missile and 146 strike drones, causing civilian deaths and injuries near Kyiv and across Ukraine, including in Odesa, Kryvyi Rih, and Zaporizhzhia.
- CSIS said it used its own analysis plus Mediazona and BBC data with British estimates, but Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov called the research unreliable Wednesday and Kyiv had no immediate comment.
