Rumen Radev's party wins Bulgarian election
Progressive Bulgaria won 44.7% of the vote, putting Rumen Radev on track to govern alone for the first time since 1997, officials said.
- On Monday, official results confirmed former President Rumen Radev's Progressive Bulgaria party won Sunday's parliamentary election, securing 44.7 percent of the vote and approximately 130 seats in the 240-seat parliament.
- Bulgarians cast ballots for the eighth time since 2021, seeking stability after mass protests ousted the previous conservative administration. Radev campaigned on a pledge to rid the Balkan nation of its "oligarchic governance model."
- Former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov's conservative GERB party trailed with 13.4 percent of the vote, running neck and neck with the reformist We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria coalition at 13.2 percent. Radev holds a mandate to govern alone if necessary.
- Despite criticizing direct arms shipments to Ukraine, Radev stated he would not use his veto to block European Union decisions. The former fighter pilot previously invited Rheinmetall to Bulgaria, positioning the country within the European defense ecosystem.
- This result follows Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's defeat last week after 16 years in power. Radev's victory signals a potential shift in Central European politics, though analysts question whether his pro-European signals will translate into sustained policy.
