'Round-the-Clock' Defence Operation Sees Royal Navy 'Swiftly' Deployed to Stalk Russian Ships for a Month
Portsmouth-based patrol ships and Wildcat helicopters tracked the frigate and about six support vessels, with 250 sailors maintaining constant watch.
Throughout April, the Royal Navy monitored the Russian frigate RFN Admiral Grigorovich and its associated shadow fleet near United Kingdom waters for an entire month without interruption.
Russia utilized the Krivak-class frigate to escort merchant and support vessels between the North Sea, Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and Baltic Sea, occasionally pausing near the Galloper wind farm to refuel.
Patrol ships HMS Tyne, HMS Mersey, and HMS Severn tracked the contingent alongside tanker RFA Tideforce and Wildcat helicopters from 815 Naval Air Squadron, with around 250 British sailors and aircrew participating.
Minister for the Armed Forces Al Carns stated the operation sent a clear message: 'UK waters are protected,' as the armed forces remain 'watching, tracking and ready' collecting valuable intelligence.
Commander Douglas Keenan of 815 NAS confirmed the unit remains on task '365 days a year,' providing persistent surveillance to ensure the continued security of vital British infrastructure.
