Rory McIlroy: ‘So Far Away From Where I Need to Be’ in Return at St. Jude
McIlroy said a three-week vacation and added weight left him off rhythm as he finished near the bottom after five birdies on Sunday.
On Sunday, Rory McIlroy finished 66th at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee, ending the tournament 8-over par after his first competitive appearance since The Open last month.
Returning from a three-week vacation, McIlroy struggled with limited preparation and fitness, admitting to "feeling lost" with his golf swing as the week progressed and his game deteriorated.
Trailing winner Scottie Scheffler by 25 shots, McIlroy struggled tee-to-green throughout the event; five birdies over his final 10 holes offered signs of encouragement but did not alter his assessment of his game.
Dropping only one spot to 13th in the FedEx Cup standings, McIlroy remains among the 50 players advancing to the BMW Championship despite his Memphis performance.
Working with swing coach Michael Bannon and caddie Harry Diamond, McIlroy plans to refine his mechanics before heading Tuesday to Bellerive Country Club outside St. Louis for the BMW Championship.
