Rockies select right-hander RJ Petit from Tigers in Rule 5 draft at winter meetings
RJ Petit, a 6-foot-8 reliever with a 2.44 ERA and mid-90s fastball, was selected by the Rockies in the Rule 5 draft after being left off Detroit's 40-man roster.
- On Wednesday in Orlando, Fla., the Colorado Rockies selected RJ Petit from the Detroit Tigers with the first of 13 major-league picks in the Rule 5 draft.
- Under Rule 5 eligibility, Petit was exposed after being left off a 40-man roster, and rules require teams without full 40-man rosters to pay $100,000 to select or offer him back for $50,000.
- This year Petit recorded a 2.44 ERA while going 10-2 in two starts and 45 relief appearances for Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo, striking out 79 and walking 22 in 66 1/3 innings with a fastball touching 98 mph plus secondary pitches.
- Past drafts show some Rule 5 draft major-league picks stay and contribute, as eight of 15 picks last December stayed with new organizations and Shane Smith became an All-Star.
- At 6-foot-8 Petit combines size and a diverse pitch mix, as he holds a 21-15 record with a 3.40 ERA and 14 saves in five minor-league seasons.
