RN Mary Skorupka who started in pediatrics, pedals with purpose for upcoming Tour de Rock
Mary Skorupka raised her Tour de Rock fundraising goal to $30,000 after strong early support for pediatric cancer research and Camp Goodtimes.
Cowichan Valley Hospital nurse Mary Skorupka increased her fundraising goal for the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock from $15,000 to $30,000 after receiving strong early support from team members.
A nurse for over 40 years, Skorupka said she is "peddling for childhood cancer" to support families affected by the disease, riding for two honorary riders from Cobble Hill and Nanaimo.
Now in its 29th year, the Tour de Rock has raised over $30 million to date, and Skorupka anticipates visiting Camp Goodtimes on July 7 to witness the program's impact firsthand.
While adjusting to the bike and steep hills has been challenging, Skorupka has evolved from initial fear to enjoying the process, supported by knowledgeable alumni trainers who anticipate riders' needs.
Riders will depart Port Alice on Sept. 19 and finish in Victoria on Oct. 2, as Skorupka reflects on whether this cycling journey will become a permanent pursuit or remain a one-time endeavor.
