RFU Backs Steve Borthwick to Lead England Into 2027 World Cup After Review
The RFU said a review found England’s slump was caused by several issues, not one failure, and kept Steve Borthwick in charge.
On Tuesday, the Rugby Football Union backed head coach Steve Borthwick to lead England through the 2027 Rugby World Cup following a review of the team's fifth-place finish in this year's Six Nations Championship.
After managing only one victory against Wales, England finished the Six Nations in fifth place, then lost four consecutive matches despite a 12-game winning streak that had raised expectations.
RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney stated the review found England's poor performance was "not the result of a singular failure or issue," but highlighted interconnected areas like discipline and execution requiring improvement.
Borthwick has engaged in the process with "full openness" and possesses clear plans to address the findings, with the RFU remaining supportive heading into the Nations Championship.
Preparations for the World Cup in Australia, 17 months away, begin with the Nations Cup, featuring England's next match against world champions South Africa in Johannesburg on July 4.
