Every year, Europe loses 1,500km² to construction. Green spaces that once sheltered wildlife, supplied food and removed carbon from the atmosphere at an alarming rate, a new investigation reveals.
The area of land that has changed from green to grey between 2018 and 2023 is around 9,000 square kilometres, an area the size of Cyprus. According to research published by The Guardian, this is land destined not only for the construction of houses and roads, but also for luxury tourism, consumption and leisure.
