North Carolina Republicans Pick State Legislator to Replace Edwards on Ballot
Five Republicans are under consideration to replace Chuck Edwards, and the nominee must win a majority at Monday evening’s committee vote.
On Monday, the North Carolina Republican Party's 11th Congressional District Executive Committee selected state Representative Jennifer Balkcom to replace Congressman Chuck Edwards on the November ballot.
Congressman Chuck Edwards withdrew from his re-election campaign last week after the House Ethics Committee recommended censure for inappropriate conduct; Edwards denied wrongdoing and will serve out his term.
The executive committee considered five potential candidates, including activist Chad Nesbitt and political figure Ken McKim, before NCGOP executive director Zach Almond oversaw finalizing the choice.
In the November midterm election, Balkcom faces Democratic nominee Jamie Ager, with forecasts giving Democrats a 57 percent chance of victory in the competitive district.
Emphasizing the need to rebuild Western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene, Balkcom stated the race is 'too important to sit out' as Republicans defend their narrow House majority.
