CJ McCollum Staying in Atlanta After Reaching $21M Extension with Hawks
McCollum's extension provides veteran scoring and leadership for Atlanta's young core, while his expiring contract offers flexibility for potential midseason trades.
On Sunday, Atlanta Hawks guard CJ McCollum agreed to a one-year, $21 million contract extension. ESPN's Shams Charania reported the deal keeps the 34-year-old off the free-agent market this summer.
The Hawks acquired McCollum, 34, from the Washington Wizards last January in the Trae Young deal. He helped the team win 18 of 20 games during a late-season surge that secured a playoff spot.
Last season, McCollum averaged 18.7 points on 45.6 percent shooting. He hit a 15-foot fadeaway to win Game 3 against the New York Knicks, where Atlanta held a 2-1 series lead.
This extension provides a veteran leader to mentor younger players like Jonathan Kuminga and Zaccharie Risacher. Agent Sam Goldfeder of Excel Sports Management confirmed the deal includes a trade kicker.
Atlanta continues what it calls an 'Effective Rebuild' while retaining financial flexibility to pursue a star player mid-season. Securing McCollum stabilizes the backcourt while the franchise evaluates its younger roster core.
