- Western Michigan announced it hired Kahil Fennell as men's basketball head coach on Saturday after he flew to Kalamazoo on Friday and signed a five-year contract starting around $400,000.
- After interviewing at least a dozen candidates, Dan Bartholomae, athletic director at Western Michigan, said WMU sought head-coaching experience and community partnership, adding 'Everybody in the department knows the expectations'.
- Fennell served on staffs at Louisville and BYU and compiled a 35-29 record in two seasons as UTRGV's head coach, leading the team to a 19-14 season and a 14-8 conference finish.
- He replaces Dwayne Stephens, who was fired after four losing seasons and a 42-84 record, with Western Michigan having not made the NCAA Tournament since 2014 and no winning season since 2017-18, last season going 10-21.
- He will be formally introduced next week at a press conference, with Bartholomae saying, 'Everybody in the department knows the expectations.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Western Michigan University Vice President/Director of Athletics Dan Bartholomae has announced the hiring of Kahil Fennell as the new head coach of the WMU Men's Basketball program. Fennell will be formally introduced as the 16th head coach in the history of the Bronco men's basketball program on Monday, March 23, at 5:30 pm at the construction site of the Kalamazoo Event Center.
