A new report says more than 300 climate cases and proposals could raise gasoline prices by 41 cents a gallon and electricity rates by 8.6%.
- A new report, Who Really Pays, claims climate litigation presents a "massive hidden price tag" to American consumers, potentially raising gas prices by roughly 41 cents per gallon if pending lawsuits and proposed laws succeed.
- The United States Supreme Court will hear arguments next week in Suncor vs. Boulder County Commissioners, a case that could determine whether local governments can use state laws to seek damages from energy companies for alleged climate change contributions.
- An assessment of more than 300 pending legal actions, three enacted state statutes, twelve legislative proposals, and one federal bill found the burden on the American energy system could reach $280 billion annually, costing households up to $2,111 each year.
- Electricity rates could increase by up to 8.6% besides more expensive gasoline; the report noted that 9.1% of low-income households' income is already spent on energy, meaning poorer families face the steepest impact.
- Power the Future founder Daniel Turner called on Congress to pass the Stop Climate Shakedowns Act, which would "reassert federal primacy over greenhouse gas regulation and bar retroactive climate liability suits" to prevent so-called "climate lawfare.
