Black Bear Trapped in Unlocked Vehicle Dies After Days in Sweltering Heat in Colorado Springs
Colorado Parks and Wildlife said the 250-pound black bear was trapped for days in the heat, and officials have logged more than 6,000 sightings this year.
- On Tuesday, Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials reported that a 300-pound black bear died after becoming trapped inside an unlocked vehicle in central Colorado Springs. The animal perished in the summer heat and remained undiscovered for days.
- Severe drought conditions have triggered a "food failure" year, forcing bears out of the mountains to search for food. This has driven a record 6,129 reports of bear sightings and conflicts through August 13, nearly double last year's 3,115 reports.
- Bears possess a sense of smell seven times greater than a bloodhound, often leading them to investigate vehicles for food. CPW urges residents to lock doors, roll up windows, and remove all trash or scented items to prevent incidents.
- Last month in nearby Manitou Springs, police and fire crews helped remove a bear trapped inside a vehicle after a similar incident. No one was injured during that rescue, and the animal escaped safely.
- Colorado recently enacted legislation lowering the legal standard for fining individuals who knowingly feed bears, with multiple offenses carrying penalties of $5,000. CPW provides online resources to help residents safely cohabitate with wildlife.
