Remains of 10 more infants recovered from Tuam site
Forensic teams are analyzing the remains and comparing 74 DNA samples as lawmakers move to expand burial rights for more relatives.
On Friday, October 2, 2026, the Office of the Director of Authorised Intervention, Tuam announced recovery of 10 additional infant remains from the former Mother and Baby Home, bringing the total discovered to 109.
The Bon Secours Sisters operated the institution from 1925 to 1961, when local historian Catherine Corless revealed in 2014 that 796 children died there without proper burial records.
Forensic anthropologists are currently examining the latest remains in a facility near Tuam, while ODAIT has collected 74 DNA reference samples to date to assist in identification.
Legislation allowing first cousins to provide DNA samples is expected to be published in the coming days, after which it will proceed through the Houses of the Oireachtas.
Following completion of work in previous sectors, ODAIT teams are now moving to examine an area 'up to and beyond' the old boundary wall of the institution's grounds.
