Edmonton Oilers Sign 2018 World Junior Player Alex Formenton to One-Year Deal
Alex Formenton returns to the NHL after being acquitted last year and posting 13 goals and 23 points in Switzerland.
On Wednesday, the Edmonton Oilers signed forward Alex Formenton to a one-year, $850,000 contract to bolster roster depth ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Formenton was acquitted last year of sexual assault charges alongside four other members of Canada's 2018 World Junior team; Hockey Canada recently lifted only his suspension.
The 26-year-old previously recorded 109 NHL games with the Ottawa Senators, tallying 23 goals and 16 assists; last season he posted 13 goals and 23 points in 42 games for Ambri-Piotta in Switzerland.
Despite availability of other free agents like Patrik Laine, the signing drew scrutiny; General Manager Stan Bowman's controversial history with the club compounded the reaction.
With Stanley Cup aspirations, the Oilers face pressure to solidify their roster; Formenton joins fellow 2018 team members Carter Hart with the Vegas Golden Knights and Dillon Dube with the St. Louis Blues.
