Women to play with small balls
England fly-half Zoe Harrison says the introduction of smaller balls for this autumn’s WXV Global Series is “the worst decision someone has ever made”. Size 4.5 balls - about 3% smaller, but the same weight as a regulation size five - will be used for the tournament in September and October.
The international rugby federation, World Rugby, has decided to change the size of the balls for the female mode of their sport. Starting from key international competitions such as this fall’s WXV Global Series or the upcoming World Cup, the players will play with a ball of size 4.5. This new model is 3% smaller than traditional size 5, although it will maintain exactly the same regulatory weight.
