A Recall Effort Has Been Called Against Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry — What You Need to Know
Organizers must collect 500,884 valid signatures by Oct. 31, 2026, to force a recall election.
On Monday, Baton Rouge residents Marian Gbaiwon Hills and Katilyn P. Stepter filed a petition to recall Republican Gov. Jeff Landry following his suspension of U.S. House elections.
Supporters allege Landry's suspension of U.S. House primaries constitutes a "pattern of actions and statements that undermine fair representation" after the Supreme Court ruled the state's congressional map an illegal racial gerrymander.
Organizers face a 180-day window to collect at least 500,884 valid signatures, representing 20% of Louisiana's 2,504,416 active registered voters, with local officials required to verify all handwritten signatures.
While Trump publicly praised the Governor for suspending the elections, Landry's office has not responded to requests for comment regarding the recall effort, which enters public record in 90 days.
Petitioners must secure the required signatures by October 31, 2026, to move the initiative toward a ballot vote, which would be certified if the threshold is reached.
