Jets’ Toews Named Masterton Finalist
Rasmus Dahlin, Gabriel Landeskog and Jonathan Toews earned the nod after returning from major health setbacks and helping their teams reach the playoffs.
On Monday, the Professional Hockey Writers Association named Buffalo Sabres defenceman Rasmus Dahlin, Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog, and Winnipeg Jets centre Jonathan Toews as finalists for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.
The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the NHL player who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey; voting is conducted by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
Dahlin managed a career-best 74 points while supporting his fiancée, Carolina Matovac, through heart failure and transplant surgery last summer, leading the Sabres to their first playoff berth in 14 years.
Landeskog returned for his first full season after missing three years with knee injuries, while Toews played all 82 games following a two-and-a-half-year absence due to long COVID and Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome.
The winner of the Masterton Trophy will be revealed in June, concluding voting by the Professional Hockey Writers Association among the three finalists.
