Supreme Court Appoints Former CJI D.Y. Chandrachud as Mediator in Sanjay Kapur Estate Row
The court ordered mediation and barred public comments while directing parties to preserve assets and disclose bank details and cryptocurrency holdings.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court appointed former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud to mediate the inheritance dispute between Rani Kapur and her daughter-in-law, Priya Kapur, over the contested Sona Group estate.
Rani Kapur alleges that after suffering a stroke in 2017, her late son Sunjay Kapur and Priya Kapur transferred her Sona Group assets into the 'RK Family Trust' using 'forged, fabricated and fraudulent' documents without her informed consent.
Justices JB Pardiwala and Ujjal Bhuyan advised the Kapur family against public social media posts about the dispute, stating it should not become a 'source of entertainment' and urging them to avoid 'long drawn litigation' through mediation.
A separate Delhi High Court case involves Karisma Kapoor's two children, Samaira and Kiaan, who challenge their late father's will and accuse Priya Kapur of being 'greedy,' resulting in asset preservation orders.
Proceedings will resume in August following the mediator's preliminary report, with parties directed to establish fees and modalities to ensure financial transparency and accountability regarding the contested estate.
