Rajasthan Cabinet Approves Bills for Uniform Civil Code, Protection of Trees
The draft UCC would bar polygamy, require marriage registration within 60 days and give sons and daughters equal inheritance rights, officials said.
- On Thursday, the Rajasthan Cabinet approved the Uniform Civil Code Bill and the Rajasthan Trees Bill, with both measures set for introduction in the Assembly's monsoon session beginning August 20.
- Parliamentary Affairs Minister Jogaram Patel affirmed the legislation aligns with Article 44 of the Constitution, describing it as an "ideal and progressive" law replacing community-specific personal laws with a uniform framework.
- The UCC Bill prohibits polygamy and mandates marriage registration within 60 days, while the Trees Bill regulates felling on non-forest land and protects 29 tree species including khejri.
- Patel noted the code excludes Scheduled Tribes and communities with protected customary rights under the Constitution, while violations concerning marriage registration could attract imprisonment of up to one year.
- Rajasthan is the fifth Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled State to advance this framework, following similar initiatives in Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Assam as the party continues pursuing its ideological agenda.
